First lesson

Since I had a mishap with my originally planned lesson, I very quickly put together something with my recordings.
I had my class listen to six of the recordings, then try to classify them as either American, Australian or British.
Best result was 4 out of 6, which is really good.
They found it difficult but interesting. Most were more comfortable with the American accents than the others. They all agreed that this was because of films and television.
I will return with a better planned lesson.

As of now I have 7 recordings, and would dearly like more.

It worked!

Ok. Four contributions so far. It's been two days. I'm happy.

I made a page where you can see who has recorded the text so far. You'll find it under "Contributions so far" above.
I've also made another site where I will collect the recordings. I will probably not make it as public as this site, but if you ask nicely I might provide the link.

How to

Hello everyone it has really been a tremendous response, and I'm humbled by the interest you have shown.

OK, how to do this?

  • Under the caption "Text" you will find a short text.
  • Record the text.
    • Try not to read to fast, but not to slow either.
    • Read it in your own dialect, don't try to mask that.
  • After you recorded it name the file like this: name-dialect-country if you can, try to be as specific as possible.
  • Send it to me nwellsten (at) gmail.com with the subject-line: dialect
  • If you want to, please write a little something about yourself within the e-mail. Name, age, where you are from etc...
  • I will then put your recording in a wiki where students can search and listen. (I will provide you with a link if you ask for it)

That should be it. Don't hesitate if you have any questions

An idea

Dear English speaking friends. As some of you know I’m working as a teacher, and one of my subjects is English.
I would like the kids in my class to know the diversity of the English language. That’s why I turn to you who are native speakers.
If you would like to help me, I will provide you with a short text, that you in turn should read and record. My pupils are about 11 so read clearly and not too fast, but in your own dialect.
Send the recording to me, anything made by smartphone or computer should work fine.
If you aren’t a native speaker but know someone who is, feel free to forward my message.

I just had a notion this could be fun.
